Itinerant Teaching

In August of 2022, I received an Itinerant Teaching position with Summer’s Corners Public School as my home and only school. I was excited to enhance my adaptability skills and gain experience working in many different classrooms. I count myself incredibly lucky to have been able to work in such a welcoming, positive environment and to build relationships with incredible teaching staff. The experience that I gained as part of this team has been invaluable to my growth as an educator. I am proud of everything that I accomplished personally and professionally in this role and am excited to demonstrate here all of the hard work that I put into making the most of my time at this school.

Class Coverage

The main portion of my role as an itinerant teacher was, of course, classroom coverage when there was a vacancy not filled by another supply teacher. It took some time for my skills to really be tested in this area as the school year ramped up, but once it did I was filling vacancies throughout the day. One of the fun things about this position is that you could be thrown into any classroom scenario at any time, and I definitely was! On any given day I could be in kindergarten, grade 5, grade 8, one of our ALC classrooms or FSL! By the spring I could safely say that I had been in every single classroom in the school and had replaced every teacher for some degree of time.

Summer’s Corners was my home school and the only one that I was assigned to – however, as is the nature of the role, I was sometimes called to fill vacancies at other schools in the area. On average, this happened about once a week. This was particularly testing my ability to adapt to changes, but through this role, I was able to build relationships with other schools in the area and become familiar with the community at large. During my role as Itinerant, I was able to be a guest teacher at the following schools:

  • Straffordville Public School
  • MacGregor Public School
  • Davenport Public School
  • Springfield Public School
  • Eva Circe Cote French Immersion
  • Port Burwell Public School
  • Forest Park Public School

Classroom Support

During such times as I was not required to fill a vacancy, I along with the assistance and input from the school administrators and teachers in the building came up with a schedule of classroom support. When I was able to follow this support schedule I was working in kindergarten classrooms, primary classrooms and intermediate classrooms supporting anything from reading intervention, supporting BAS reading assessments, working one-on-one with behaviorally-challenged students, assisting with completing class work and tutoring to increase math skills. Below you will find my support schedule for each day in the cycle, as well as a copy of the records that I kept to keep track of where I was during each block of the day and what I was doing.

Fun times with students

The best part about my time working as an itinerant teacher was interacting with and getting the know the students. The pictures below are some examples of the things that I got to be a part of while working in the various classrooms in the building.
